Terms and Conditions

We want to make sure you have an enjoyable Portland Bike Hire experience. To help us make this happen please be aware of our terms and conditions below.

Making a cycle hire, guided ride or skills course booking

Before requesting payment Portland Bike Hire will confirm the full details of your booking using your preferred method of communication.

For cycling tours upon receipt of your guaranteed booking we’ll send you a Portland Bike Hire Adventure trip confirmation email containing information about getting to the start, a detailed  itinerary, and other useful hire information.

Methods of Payment

Your Portland Bike Hire advenutre booking is not guaranteed until payment has been received. For cycle hire, tours/ guiding and skills courses (‘an activity’), full payment is required before any cycling equipment or service will be delivered.

We accept payment by credit card (Visa etc), UK debit cards, bank transfer, bank and Paypal.


A deposit of 50% per person is required to guarantee a Portland Bike Hire booking with more than 90 days to go before the activity start date. Full payment must then be made no later than 90 days before the start date of the activity to guarantee your booking.

Payment in Full

All Portland Bike hire bookings received within 90 days of an activity start date require payment in full.

Cycle Hire, Guided Cycling and Skills Course Booking Cancellations and Refunds

No refunds will be given for any activity booking cancellations.

If you are unable to undertake your cycle hire or guided ride booking due to serious illness, jury service, weather or any other serious reason, your booking can be transferred to another date subject to availability with in a 6 month period from the original booking date. Transfers can only be made if you cancel your booking at least one day before the date of the activity.

If you do not turn up to collect your hire equipment and/or for your guided ride on the agreed date of your booking, without notifying Cycle Adventure at least one day before, we will not be able to transfer your booking to another date.


Helmets are provided free of charge for all Cycle Adventure activities and we strongly encourage their use.

As a condition of booking with Cycle Adventure all persons under 18 years of age are required to wear a helmet. Adults refusing to wear a helmet will be required to sign our Helmet Waiver form.
Young Person Supervision

All persons under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult for all Cycle Adventure activities (cycle hire, guiding, skills courses and tours).


Proof of identification must be provided upon collection of your cycling equipment. (E.g. driving licence, passport, photo ID, etc.)

A damage deposit is required when hiring equipment and will take the form of an open credit card voucher, which will be destroyed upon return of the equipment in a satisfactory condition. All cycles and equipment are thoroughly checked after each hire, and any damage found will be charged for.

Equipment booked and paid for in advance is guaranteed and will be available for delivery and collection at the pre-arranged times and location as agreed at the time of booking.
Please cycle sensibly, with respect for others and the natural habitat.

Cyclists are expected to follow The Highway Code – in particular the ‘Extra Rules for Cyclists’ (Rules 187-211).

Anyone cycling in a discourteous or unsafe manner while in possession of Cycle Adventure equipment will have the equipment re-possessed by Cycle Adventure with no refund of hire charges.

Cycle helmets are provided free of charge and all cyclists are strongly advised to use them. Adults who decline our offer of a free helmet must sign our Helmet Waiver declaration.

All young persons (age 17 or younger) MUST wear a cycle helmet and they will not be issued a bicycle without one.

Young persons (age 17 or younger) will only be issued with equipment when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Theft of a bicycle will be the responsibility of the hirer, who will be subject to a charge of at least £300 to cover the replacement of the bicycle and its accessories.

All equipment must be returned to the agreed collection point at the correct time as indicated on the booking form. We reserve the right to charge an additional £15 for late returns for each cycle.

No refunds or reductions will be given for any equipment that is returned early for any reason.

Cycling equipment will only be hired to customers who attend a pre-cycle hire briefing at the time of collection. If for any reason we believe a customer cannot competently ride a cycle we reserve the right not to issue them with any cycling equipment.

Portland Bike Hire reserves the right not to hire equipment to an individual.

These Terms and Conditions apply after a booking confirmation email is sent, payment is made or phone confirmation has been agreed via Portland Bike Hire.
